29 Dec 09 Burlusconi Sky Italia and Recent Changes to Italian Channels
Silvio Berlusconi head of Mediaset and as PM , in control of the State broadcaster RAI and Rupert Murdoch CEO of Sky Italia are going head to head over the future of satellite and terrestrial broadcasting in Italy. In a bid to end Murdochs monopoly in Italy the sales tax on his subscriptions has been raised from 10 to 20% . Mediaset began pulling out of its own and RAIs programmes from the Sky platform despite being offered 50 million Euros for the RAI premium channels. All this is causing much confusion over the future for viewers like us in the Uk. A new consortium has been formed , called TiVu Sat consisting of the groups Mediaset, RAI and La7. From July 2009 the satellite platform will carry all the channels of the members main channels and is to remain free to viewers in Italy. A viewing card using NagraVision encryption is to be given to them at no cost. This is a move similar to the French TNT system where although described as 'free view' the set top boxes are only ( easily ) available in the country of origin currently around 100Euro. At the moment the Tivu card 'unscrambles' about 22 channels, but more are planned in the very near future , some in HD. From RAI , there are RAI1, 2, 3, News and 4, RAI Sport, Storia, Gulp. From La7 there will be MTV and La7 channels. And from Mediaset there are Iris films, MediaShopping Boing Canale5, Rete4 and Italia 1. Mediaset have just announced that their prime channel 'Canale5' may be encrypted in the future. If you already have a Nagravision receiver, you can request a smart card from RAI, for other types of receiver with the standard CI slot, a Nagra CAM will be on sale starting in 2010. The condition for supply seems to be possession of the Italian tv license, a form is available to apply for this, on processing the application your serial number becomes available (on line) and you should then be able to purchase any TiVU product.
